Richard Gere Prepares to Leave the U.S.
Hollywood icon Richard Gere is ready for a new chapter. At 75, the actor recently sold his lavish Connecticut estate for $10.75 million, signaling big changes ahead.
A Move to Europe
Gere, famous for his role in Pretty Woman, plans to relocate to Europe. His wife, Alejandra Silva, hails from Spain, and the move will bring her closer to her roots. Gere shared, “For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, lifelong friends, and culture.”
The couple married in 2018 and has lived in the U.S. since. In 2022, they purchased a sprawling New Canaan estate for $10.8 million, previously owned by Paul Simon and Edie Brickell. The 32-acre property boasts six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a pool, and a guest cottage.
Why the Sudden Move?
Rumors swirled that Gere intended to turn the estate into a farm, but those plans never materialized. Instead, he sold the property, pocketing a modest profit. The real reason for the move? A fresh start abroad.
In an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Gere revealed his excitement about living in Spain. He praised the joy and happiness of Spanish culture and expressed a desire to explore life outside the U.S.
A Love Rooted in Activism
Gere and Silva’s romance began with their shared dedication to charity work. The Spanish businesswoman and activist has long supported nonprofits aiding underprivileged children. The actor acknowledged her sacrifices, saying, “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it’s only fair I give her six in hers.”
Is Politics a Factor?
Some speculated that Gere’s political activism played a role in his decision. Known for his criticisms of Donald Trump, Gere has been outspoken about human rights issues, particularly in Tibet. However, his move appears unrelated to politics.
Spain Beckons
Gere has expressed his love for Spain and his enthusiasm for the move. While the family embarks on this adventure, they’ll maintain a home in New York, ensuring a connection to the U.S.
As the actor embraces life abroad, fans wish Gere and his family happiness on their new journey.
