Serena Williams Opens Up About Health Scare
Health Scare and Surgery
Serena Williams recently shared her experience with a health scare that required surgery. She had a branchial cyst, “the size of a grapefruit,” removed from her neck.
Discovery and Diagnosis
In May, Williams discovered a lump on the side of her neck. Initially, doctors told her it was optional to remove it. However, the lump kept growing. After further tests, including three tests and one biopsy, doctors advised her to have the cyst removed to prevent infection or leakage.
What Is a Branchial Cyst?
Williams was diagnosed with a branchial cleft cyst, a benign fluid-filled sac in the neck. These cysts grow slowly and are typically harmless but can cause swelling.
Recovery and Gratitude
Despite feeling unwell during a shopping trip with her daughter, Olympia, Williams shared videos of her recovery. She expressed gratitude, saying, “I’m healthy, and everything worked out.”
