The Mystery of the “Squnk”
Recently, a fascinating creature has captured attention in Northeast Ohio: an animal that looks like a mix between a squirrel and a skunk. Dubbed the “squnk,” it has the body of a squirrel but the dark black fur and white-tipped tail of a skunk.
Unraveling the “Squnk” Mystery
Several sightings and viral photos of this animal have sparked speculation that it might be a hybrid of both species. However, the truth is that the “squnk” is actually a rare black squirrel.
What’s Behind the Dark Coat?
Black squirrels, like the one spotted in Ohio, are the result of eastern gray squirrels and fox squirrels breeding. The darker fur comes from a gene variant in the eastern gray squirrel, as noted by Smithsonian Magazine. Despite their unusual appearance, black squirrels aren’t hybrids, just a rare genetic variation.
Rare Yet Resilient
Only one in every 10,000 squirrels has this dark coat, which helps them stay warm in colder climates. Black squirrels also have a unique connection to Kent State University, where they were introduced in 1961 and have since become the school’s unofficial mascot.
A Striking Creature
So, if you spot a “squnk” in Ohio, you’re simply seeing a rare black squirrel with a skunk-like tail—not a hybrid and certainly no need to worry about getting sprayed.
