At first, Parton was cautious. She refused to go out with him but invited him to visit while she babysat her nephew. Carl came every day that week, and eventually, she agreed to go out with him. He drove her straight to his parents’ house to introduce her to his family.
“He said he knew right the minute he saw me that I was the one,” Parton revealed.

Parton and Dean married in May 1966, when Parton was 20 and Dean was 23. Their wedding marked a turning point in Parton’s career as she began working with Porter Wagoner. In 2015, Parton reflected on their bond: “We’re completely opposite, but that’s what makes it fun. I never know what he’s gonna say or do. He’s always surprising me.”

After 58 years of marriage, Carl Dean passed away on March 3, 2025, at 82. In a statement, Parton expressed her sorrow: “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.”
