The Liver: Key Functions, Fatty Liver Symptoms, Causes, Risk Factors, and Prevention

The liver, located beneath the rib cage on the right side of the abdomen, is about the size of a football. It plays a vital role in digestion and detoxification.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) often has no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen

If the liver develops Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) or cirrhosis, more severe symptoms may appear, such as:

  • Abdominal swelling (ascites)
  • Enlarged blood vessels under the skin
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Red palms
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)

Causes of Fatty Liver

The exact cause of fatty liver remains unclear, but certain factors contribute to fat accumulation in the liver:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Insulin resistance
  • High blood sugar (indicating prediabetes or type 2 diabetes)
  • High triglyceride levels in the blood

These factors often lead to fat deposits in the liver, which can cause inflammation, potentially progressing to NASH and liver scarring.

Risk Factors for Fatty Liver

Several conditions increase the risk of developing NAFLD, including:

  • High cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Obesity, particularly abdominal fat
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypothyroidism and hypopituitarism

NASH is more likely in individuals who are older, diabetic, or have abdominal fat.

Prevention Tips for Fatty Liver

To reduce the risk of NAFLD:

  1. Eat a Healthy Diet: Focus on a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.
  2. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Aim to lose weight if overweight by reducing calories and exercising regularly.
  3. Exercise Regularly: Engage in physical activity most days of the week, after consulting with a doctor if necessary.

Treatment Strategies for Fatty Liver

To manage fatty liver:

  • Lose Weight: Focus on gradual weight loss if overweight or obese.
  • Avoid Overeating: Reduce portions to prevent excess fat storage.
  • Eat Liver-Friendly Foods: Choose foods that help reduce liver fat, like leafy greens and healthy fats.

Foods to Avoid for Fatty Liver

Limit or avoid the following:

  • High-fat foods
  • Cholesterol-rich foods: eggs, butter, fatty meats, and whole milk
  • Saturated fats: lard, coconut oil, palm oil
