Facing the Questions
Most married couples hear the question, “When will you have children?” For Charli Worgan and her husband, Cullen, people often asked, “Why?”
Living in Sydney, the couple shares a unique journey. Each has a different form of dwarfism and faces public scrutiny—especially when Charli became pregnant with their first child.
Sharing Their Story
After welcoming their first daughter, Charli felt inspired to educate others about their family. She launched a social media account, never expecting it to gain massive popularity. Today, the couple has two beautiful daughters, and Charli’s Instagram boasts over 300,000 followers.
A Bittersweet Announcement
Recently, Charli revealed she was 14 weeks pregnant with her third baby. However, the announcement came with heartache. Each pregnancy requires painful genetic testing. Their children could inherit Charli’s dwarfism, Cullen’s, be of average height, or inherit both types—a combination doctors say is fatal.
Unlike many mothers who celebrate reaching 12 weeks, Charli instead faced Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS), a procedure similar to Amniocentesis. A massive needle through her abdomen collected placenta samples, carrying a 2% risk of miscarriage. The test would determine their baby’s genetic makeup.
Four Possible Outcomes
Charli explained the possibilities:
- Their baby could be of average height.
- The baby might have Achondroplasia, like Charli.
- The baby could have Geleophysic Dysplasia, like Cullen.
- The baby might inherit both conditions, known as “double dominant dwarfism,” which is considered fatal. If this happened, Charli would face the difficult choice of continuing or terminating the pregnancy.
Charli anxiously waited to learn: “Can I bring this little one into the world in March 2021, or does their journey end here?”
Addressing Criticism
Opening her life to the public brought judgment. Some criticized her for having children despite the odds. She responded candidly: “This decision isn’t simple. Those who doubt should see that bringing a child into the world with my odds takes deep thought and kindness.”
Welcoming Baby Rip
In February, Charli gave birth to their baby boy, Rip. She shared a heartfelt post with a picture of her newborn, writing, “I’m exhausted but incredibly grateful. There’s no ‘right’ way to do motherhood, but I know there’s no ‘wrong’ way either.”
Inspiring Others
Despite challenges, Charli proves that parenthood is universal—filled with struggles, joys, and love. Her story resonates with many, inspiring kindness and understanding.
