Donald Trump stunned the public by announcing plans to reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison — but experts warn this move won’t come cheap.

Social Media Announcement Sparks Debate

As usual, Trump took to Truth Social on May 4, outlining his “tough on crime” plan. He declared:

“REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat offenders.”
He insisted the U.S. must once again lock away its most dangerous criminals, just as it did in the past.

Costly History Behind Alcatraz

Alcatraz, which closed in 1963, didn’t shut down because it was empty — it shut down because it was expensive.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Alcatraz cost almost three times more to operate than other federal prisons, largely due to its isolated island location.

Repairs Would Cost Millions

Alcatraz historian John Martini told KRON 4 that even back in 1962, repair estimates hit $5 million — equal to about $52 million today.
Worse, the old prison now lacks running water, sanitation, heating, and sufficient electricity. Martini bluntly said:

“Turning Alcatraz back into an operational penitentiary makes as much sense as rebuilding Fort Sumter and arming it with missile cannons.”

Critics Dismiss Proposal

Meanwhile, Democrat and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed Trump’s idea outright. She posted on Twitter:

“Alcatraz closed as a penitentiary more than sixty years ago. It’s now a popular national park and tourist site.
The President’s proposal is not a serious one.”
