Ever noticed tiny white or yellowish bumps on your lips or genitals? They might be Fordyce spots—a harmless and very common skin feature. “They have nothing to do with poor hygiene, infections, or se.xually transmitted diseases (STDs),” and are not painful or itchy.
These bumps aren’t warts, herpes, or pimples. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, they’re “a normal anatomical variant, not a medical issue.” Don’t squeeze or pick at them—doing so can irritate your skin and cause scarring.
Fordyce spots are simply oil glands that appear on areas without hair, like the lips or genitals. “Normally, these glands are hidden… but in areas without hair, the glands can become visible.” About 70–80% of adults have them, even if they don’t notice.
You don’t “catch” Fordyce spots—they’re something you’re born with. They usually become visible during puberty due to hormone changes. “If your parents had visible Fordyce spots, there’s a good chance you might too.”
Most doctors say there’s no need for treatment unless the appearance bothers you. Options like laser therapy or creams exist but results vary. The Mayo Clinic states they “don’t require any medical treatment.” Some spots may fade with time, others may remain unchanged.
If they suddenly change in size, color, or become painful, it’s smart to consult a doctor. Conditions like cysts or warts can look similar. Still, in most cases, “living with Fordyce spots doesn’t require special care or treatment.”
