The astronaut who spent 178 days in space reveals the major ‘lie’ he discovered upon seeing Earth.

Astronaut’s Sobering Realization from Space

An astronaut has shared a powerful insight after viewing Earth from space. Ron Garan, a former NASA astronaut, spent 178 days in space, covering over 71 million miles in 2,842 orbits during his career.

The ‘Lie’ of Humanity

Reflecting on his experiences, Garan believes humanity is “living a lie.” In an interview with Big Think, he revealed how society has misunderstood its priorities. His revelation is far more profound than any flat Earth theory.

The Overview Effect

Garan experienced the ‘overview effect,’ a phenomenon that many astronauts encounter when they see Earth from space. According to BBC’s Sky at Night magazine, this effect can lead to ‘spiritual awakenings’ and a deeper connection to our planet. Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell described it as an “explosion of awareness.”

For those fortunate enough to view Earth from such a unique perspective, it often triggers unexpected and overwhelming emotions.

A Thin Layer of Life

Garan’s perspective of Earth led to his sobering conclusion. “I saw the paparazzi-like flashes of lightning storms, and I saw dancing curtains of auroras that felt within reach,” he recounted. “I also noticed the unbelievable thinness of our planet’s atmosphere.”

In that moment, he realized that this paper-thin layer is essential for the survival of all living things. Instead of seeing the economy, he observed “an iridescent biosphere teeming with life.” He noted, “Our human-made systems treat everything, including our life-support systems, as subsidiaries of the global economy. From space, it’s clear we’re living a lie.”

A Profound Experience

In a conversation with Forbes, Garan described the experience as something that “just blew him away.” He added, “Being completely detached from Earth made me feel deeply connected with everyone on the planet. It was this overwhelming kinship.”

Shifting Our Priorities

Garan’s observations highlight a crucial message: we must shift our priorities. Since returning to Earth, he has become a passionate advocate for environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing planetary health over economic gains.

He founded the Manna Energy Foundation, a nonprofit focused on ensuring access to clean drinking water in developing nations, and the project Fragile Oasis, which aims for positive global change.

As humanity continues its quest for the stars, the lessons learned from space may hold the key to sustaining a thriving Earth for future generations.
