Stephen A. Smith claims the Minnesota ICE agent acted “completely justified” under the law in the fatal shooting of the woman

Stephen A. Smith Comments on ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

Legal Justification Claimed
ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith has weighed in on the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, 37, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, calling the officer’s actions “completely justified” from a legal standpoint. Good was shot three times in the face during a standoff that ended when she tried to drive her SUV away from officers.

In a 25-minute YouTube video, Smith explained, “I saw the video on numerous occasions and seeing what transpired from a lawful perspective, as it pertains to a law enforcement official, don’t expect him to be prosecuted. He was completely justified.”

Criticism of the Shooting Method

Despite supporting the legal perspective, Smith criticized the officer’s choice to shoot directly rather than disable the vehicle. “From a humanitarian perspective, however, why did you have to do that?” he asked. “If you could move out of the way, that means you could have shot the tires.”

He continued, “She wrongfully tried to drive off and disregarded a law enforcement official. As a result, she lost her life.”

ICE and Federal Officials Back Officer

ICE maintains that Good intentionally drove toward officers, though witnesses and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed this claim, calling it “bulls**t.” Video shows one officer attempting to open the SUV door before the car surged forward. Another officer then fired through the windshield after reportedly being struck.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the officer at a press conference. “Any loss of life is a tragedy, and I think we can all agree it was preventable,” she said. “Our officer followed his training and did exactly what he’s been taught to do in that situation.” Noem added the officer was hit by the SUV and briefly hospitalized. “He is an experienced officer and he certainly went out and used his training today.”

Smith: It Didn’t Have to End This Way

Smith stressed that alternative approaches could have spared Good’s life. “She was in the car, protesting, blocking the street… and she tried to take off,” he said. “In their eyes, they consider it an act of domestic terrorism because she tried to run over an ICE officer.”

He continued, “But it wasn’t necessary. You could have arrested her. You could have spared the woman’s life. You didn’t have to kill her. Even though the law might support him, humanity comes into question.”

Good died at the scene after crashing into two parked cars. Smith concluded, “We’re living in a country now where some people are becoming lawless… but they are also taking lives. In this case, it was totally unnecessary.”
