When Paul Brittain answered the phone that day, he thought he was taking a routine call about firewood. Instead, he heard the trembling voice of an 85-year-old widow, scared of the cold creeping into her small home and of the bills she couldn’t pay until her next check arrived. She didn’t ask for favors; she simply hoped to buy enough wood to stay warm. Brittain refused to let her face winter alone. He loaded his truck, drove to her house, and delivered the firewood for free.

Seeing her living conditions, he realized warmth was only part of the struggle. He and his crew repaired her leaking roof, fixed her failing heat, put new tires on her car, and stocked enough wood to last the season — all at no cost. Then he shared her story, and strangers across the country rallied, raising tens of thousands of dollars. What began as one man’s quiet decision became a powerful reminder that decency still exists, and that compassion, once sparked, can spread farther than anyone expects.
