Hollywood icon and Sundance visionary Robert Redford passed away at 89 in the wild, mountainous paradise he cherished, far from the spotlight that once defined him.
“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” said his publicist.
Sundance now stands as a living tribute, where every pine tree and snow-covered trail echoes his enduring legacy.

A Love Rooted in the Mountains
Sundance wasn’t just a retreat; it shaped Redford’s personal life. He met multimedia artist and environmental activist Sibylle Szaggars at the Sundance Mountain Resort in 1996. They married in 2009, and the mountains became central to their life together.
“This home is truly near and dear to my heart,” Szaggars said when listing their four-bedroom, five-bathroom property for $3,995,000.
Nestled among towering pines, the residence overlooks Mount Timpanogos, with waterfalls and untouched trails reflecting the couple’s reverence for nature. Though Szaggars moved to Santa Fe to focus on her art, the Utah home remains a testament to their shared story.
Sundance Mountain Resort: Legacy Meets Landscape
Beyond the home lies the heartbeat of Redford’s vision: Sundance Mountain Resort. Unlike sprawling Utah ski resorts, Sundance was designed to endure, not to dazzle.
Redford first discovered Provo Canyon in the late 1950s. By 1961, he bought two acres—a modest start to what became a 5,000-acre sanctuary. He acquired additional land over the years, placing more than half under conservation easements to protect the wilderness.
For Redford, Sundance was never just a place—it was a feeling. It shaped his life, work, and environmental mission.
The resort spans just 500 acres, intentionally small. Nestled within the forest at the base of Mount Timpanogos, it blends with the natural landscape rather than overshadowing it. It remains a sanctuary where art, nature, and community coexist, a testament to Redford’s lifelong values.
