Reasons to avoid wiping more than three times after using the bathroom

Why You Shouldn’t Wipe Excessively: A Guide to a Cleaner Bathroom Routine

Let’s be honest—everyone has been there. You finish your business in the bathroom, only to find yourself wiping far more than expected. Maybe it’s three times, maybe five. But if you’re consistently wiping more than three times, an expert suggests it might signal an issue.

What Causes Excessive Wiping?

In a viral TikTok video, Georgia Reupert-Allen, a pelvic floor physiotherapist from BIEN Australia, breaks down the problem and offers practical advice. According to her, wiping more than three times could mean you’re experiencing something called fecal smearing. This happens when leftover stool remains near the entrance of your anus after a bowel movement.

“Essentially, fecal smearing occurs when excess stool stays behind, leading to the need for repeated wiping,” Reupert-Allen explains.

Try This Simple Technique

Before you give up in frustration, here’s some good news: a simple technique could reduce all that extra wiping. Reupert-Allen recommends trying progressive pelvic floor muscle squeezing, which sounds fancy but is easy to do.

How It Works:

  1. Gradually Squeeze Your Muscles – Start by squeezing your pelvic floor muscles at 20% strength.

  2. Increase the Intensity – Progressively increase to 50%, 80%, and then 100% by the end of your bowel movement.

  3. Repeat Four Times – This technique helps close your anal sphincter more effectively, minimizing leftover stool.

This method targets possible weakness in the external sphincter, which might be the cause of excessive wiping.

When to Seek Medical Help

If the technique doesn’t solve the problem, don’t panic. Other factors, like hemorrhoids or scar tissue, could be contributing to the issue. It’s also important to monitor your bowel habits. Ideally, you should have a bowel movement one to three times a day or at least three times a week.

If concerns persist, consult your doctor for a proper evaluation.

TikTok’s Take: A Relatable Conversation

The TikTok comments section is buzzing with humor and shared experiences. From jokes about “hairy situations” to relatable struggles, it’s clear that the advice hit home for many viewers.

Bottom Line: Don’t Ignore Excessive Wiping

Excessive wiping isn’t just inconvenient—it’s a sign that something may need adjustment. By trying the pelvic floor squeeze technique and seeking medical advice if needed, you can improve your bathroom routine for a smoother, cleaner finish.

So, next time you catch yourself wiping too much, remember there’s hope—and help—for a more efficient experience.
