Stranger’s Bravery Saves 3-Year-Old During Bondi Beach Attack

In the aftermath of the Bondi Beach attack, the parents of three-year-old Gigi have spoken out to honor the stranger who heroically saved their daughter’s life.

The attack occurred during a Chanukah by the Sea event on Sunday, December 14 — the first night of Hanukkah. Two gunmen reportedly opened fire on hundreds of families gathered for the celebration, killing 15 and injuring 42 others.

A Hero Emerges Amid Chaos

Among the panicked crowd, a woman named Jess shielded Gigi with her own body as gunfire erupted. Despite being injured and bleeding, Jess protected the child from harm. Gigi’s parents, Wayne and Vanessa, called it “an absolute miracle,” expressing profound gratitude for Jess’s selfless courage.

Wayne said, “I’m indebted to her for the rest of my life.” Social media users echoed the sentiment, hailing Jess as a hero.

Frantic Search for Gigi

Wayne and Vanessa were at opposite ends of Archer Park, near the Bondi Pavilion, when the shooting began. Wayne hid under a table with their daughter Capri, while Vanessa tried to protect their other child. Frantically, they called each other to confirm Gigi’s whereabouts.

“Maybe a minute later, Vanessa called and asked, ‘Have you got Gigi?’ I said no, she didn’t have Gigi, and that’s when absolute panic set in,” Wayne recalled.

Gigi had been dancing in the grass just moments before vanishing from sight. Vanessa described the terror: “All I could do was scream, ‘Where’s my little girl?’”

The Life-Saving Moment

After the gunfire subsided, Wayne rushed through the chaos, scanning the ground amid blood and debris. He spotted Jess lying atop Gigi, shielding her. Despite her injuries, Jess reassured Wayne: “I’ve got your daughter. I’ve been protecting her.”

Wayne embraced Gigi and thanked Jess, overwhelmed with emotion. He remained by her side for about ten minutes before she was taken to the hospital.

National Shock and Response

The Bondi Beach attack has shocked Australia. Wayne described the scene as terrifying: “We were just sitting ducks. It was the most appalling experience that this can happen here.”

New South Wales Police confirmed it was a terrorist attack targeting a Jewish community event. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence as “an act of evil, antisemitism, and terrorism.” He also pledged to strengthen Australia’s firearm laws.

The attackers, Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, were legally permitted to own firearms. Sajid died at the scene, while Naveed remains in critical condition.

Global Condemnation

The attack sparked international outrage. King Charles III called it “the most dreadful antisemitic terrorist attack” to strike the nation, expressing deep sorrow and solidarity.
