Gas Station Owner’s Bold Sign Challenges the Struggles of Low-Income Customers.

Lake Fork’s Hidden Gem: Star Mart

A Quiet Spot with a Big Heart
Lake Fork, a well-known East Texas reservoir 65 miles east of Dallas, is famous for its large bass, but there’s more than meets the eye in the area. A small convenience store, Star Mart, is quietly making waves of its own.

Frank Hemani’s Generosity
Owned by Frank Hemani, a self-described “people person,” Star Mart is nestled on Farm Road 515, serving locals and anglers hoping for a record catch. The store seems unremarkable at first glance, but one sign near the refrigerator window stands out.

A Bold Message
The sign reads, “If you don’t have money or a job, you can have a sandwich and a bottle of water for free.” Frank, who sees people struggling in the area, started offering this gesture to help. He donates about six sandwiches each week to those in need.

A Personal Story of Kindness
Frank recalls a particular moment when he saw a woman with two hungry children in the backseat of her car. Unable to afford food, she was in tears. Frank made them a pizza, explaining, “I have been blessed. I have never had to struggle.”

Inspired by a YouTube Video
The idea came from a YouTube video he saw, where a grocery store did something similar. This inspired Frank to pay it forward, and the sign has been up for two months now. “There are a lot of people out there who will help other people,” he said.

A Longtime Community Member
Living in the community for 10 years, Frank knows everyone. Besides Star Mart, he owns two other businesses, including Minnow Bucket Marina near Quitman.

A Simple Gesture with Big Impact
With his kind heart and generous offer, Frank’s simple action continues to inspire those around him.
