Emily Mitchell was drinking her morning coffee during her fifth pregnancy when she unexpectedly became unresponsive

A Morning Like Any Other—Until It Wasn’t

At 36, Emily Mitchell appeared healthy, energetic, and busy planning her next homeschooling project. But one quiet morning in December 2020, her life ended without warning.

While enjoying toast and coffee during her second trimester with her fifth child, Emily suddenly became unresponsive. Despite her family’s immediate efforts, they couldn’t revive her. Within minutes, a seemingly ordinary morning turned into a devastating tragedy.

A Joyful Announcement Weeks Earlier

Just weeks before, Emily and her husband Joseph had shared exciting news. In a November 19 post, Emily held up an ultrasound photo, beaming beside her husband. The caption read:

“YOU GUYS. NUMBER FIVE. 🥳 Who guessed the secret?!!! 🤣🥳🥳…Number FIVE comin in hot and we are here 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 it 👏🏻.”

This joyful moment fit perfectly into the online life Emily shared with her growing audience—one centered on faith, family, and education.

Life at Home with the Mitchells

Living in Rhode Island, Emily poured her heart into raising and educating her four children—Finn, Isla, Edie, and Lulu. She and Joseph had committed to homeschooling from the start. For Emily, learning wasn’t limited to books.

She created hands-on projects, nature walks, and themed educational bundles. Through her platform, The Hidden Way Learning, she reached homeschooling families nationwide. In 2020, she launched the Nature Mega Bundle, followed by a second edition. A third was already in the works before she passed.

A Sudden C0llapse

On December 22, Emily started her morning like usual—breakfast, coffee, and quiet moments with family. Then, without warning, she c0llapsed.

Her husband, children, and father acted fast. Paramedics rushed in and did everything they could. But Emily could not be revived. Her unborn child passed with her.

Waiting for Answers

The sudden loss stunned her family and followers. How could someone so full of life vanish so quickly? Days later, the state Medical Examiner confirmed the cause: a pulmonary embolism.

Her family publicly shared the heartbreaking news, along with a message of faith:

“Although it is challenging to wrap our heads around how this could have happened, we are certain that it was simply her time; the Lord was calling her home.”

What Is a Pulmonary Embolism?

pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life-thr**tening condition caused by a bl0*d clot blocking a lung artery. The clot often forms in the legs or arms and travels through the bl0*dstream. Once it lodges in the lungs, it can cut off oxygen and strain the heart.

This condition is especially dangerous during pregnancy. Hormonal changes increase clotting risk, and the growing uterus can restrict bl0*d flow from the legs and pelvis.

Symptoms of Pulmonary Embolism

  • Sudden shortness of breath

  • Chest pain or sharp pain that worsens with breathing

  • Rapid heartbeat or fainting

  • Coughing, possibly with bl0*d

  • Bluish skin or cold sweat

Tragically, in many cases—including Emily’s—symptoms appear too late or not at all. About one-third of untreated cases result in d**th before diagnosis.

Life After Loss

After Emily’s passing, Joseph faced the unimaginable: raising four children while grieving his wife and unborn baby. But he wasn’t alone.

The online community Emily built came forward with love, prayers, and support. A fundraiser helped cover living and education costs for the children. Family friends stepped in to help continue the homeschooling routine.

In a public message, the Mitchells shared their gratitude:

“We appreciate everyone’s concerns about her sudden passing, and want to thank you all for the love you’ve expressed…”

Keeping Emily’s Legacy Alive

Emily’s work lives on in the lessons she created, the community she nurtured, and the children she taught. Her husband and children remain committed to homeschooling—just as she would have wanted.

Through nature walks, quiet moments, and shared learning, they continue honoring her spirit: grounded, joyful, and full of love.
