On February 19, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at cutting “all taxpayer-funded benefits” for undocumented migrants. The order, titled “Ending taxpayer subsidization of open borders,” references the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA), which prohibits illegal aliens from receiving most public benefits. Trump’s order accuses the Biden administration of undermining this law, leading to improper taxpayer expenditure. The order seeks to identify and align federal programs with the law, ensuring that federal funds do not support illegal immigration or sanctuary policies. It also mandates better eligibility verification to prevent benefits from reaching those unlawfully present in the US. The White House aims to prevent taxpayer money from facilitating illegal immigration and to protect resources for American citizens in need.
