A mother warns that nutmeg can get teens high by releasing a toxic substance.

Georgia Mom Warns About Nutmeg Abuse

A Georgia mother recently went viral on TikTok, warning parents about a disturbing new trend: teenagers getting high by sniffing nutmeg, a common spice found in kitchen cupboards.

The Dangers of Nutmeg

In the viral video, the mom explains that nutmeg, typically used in sweet and savory dishes, can cause dangerous intoxication. When consumed in large quantities, nutmeg releases a toxic substance, leading to what is called “nutmeg intoxication.” This can result in hallucinations, drowsiness, and, in severe cases, can be potentially fatal.

The Discovery at School

On March 11, the mom, known as Lakeview Living on TikTok, shared her shock after a school backpack check revealed that several students were carrying bottles of nutmeg. When asked, the teens claimed the spice was for “culinary class.” However, the teacher learned that nutmeg was not part of any curriculum, prompting the school’s resource officer to confiscate the spice and suspend the students involved.

The Psychoactive Effects of Nutmeg

Nutmeg contains myristicin, which, when consumed, is metabolized into methylenedioxyamphetamine (MMDA), a psychoactive compound. This can cause symptoms like drowsiness and hallucinations. While it may sound like a harmless way to get high, nutmeg abuse can lead to dangerous poisoning.

Parents React

Many parents on TikTok shared their concern, noting that nutmeg abuse has been around for years. One mom expressed gratitude for teachers’ vigilance, saying, “As a mom of four, I’m thankful for teachers and their patience with my kids.” Others recalled warnings about the dangers of nutmeg use from years ago, with one user joking about how it was a known issue since “Gen X.”

The History of Nutmeg as a Drug

The use of nutmeg as a psychoactive substance dates back centuries. Historically, nutmeg was used in medicine for a variety of purposes, including as an aphrodisiac, narcotic, and treatment for various ailments. While it’s still used for medicinal purposes today, it can be toxic when misused.

The Mother’s Frustration

In the video, the mother expresses frustration with the trend, saying, “You know why they’re all suspended? Because these flippin’ teenagers have figured out you can use nutmeg to get high.” She ends the video by questioning, “Is nothing sacred anymore?”

Spread the Word

The viral video has sparked a conversation among parents and educators about the risks of spice abuse. The mom urges others to share her message, especially to keep spices locked up and out of reach of teenagers experimenting with harmful substances.
