**What I Do When My Dog Barks at Strangers**

Having a rescued dog comes with its own set of unique challenges, especially when it comes to their behavior around strangers. Dogs that have experienced trauma or have been inadequately socialized can often react strongly when encountering new people. My own rescued dog used to bark incessantly whenever a stranger approached, making walks and visits quite stressful for both of us.

The first step I took was understanding why my dog reacted this way. His barking was not just noise; it was a form of communication. Often, it was rooted in fear or anxiety. By recognizing this, I could approach the problem with empathy rather than frustration. I began reinforcing positive behavior with treats and praise whenever he remained calm in the presence of strangers.

One effective technique I learned was the “look at me” command. By training my dog to focus his attention on me instead of the stranger, I could redirect his anxiety and provide him with comfort and assurance. Consistency was key in practicing this command, along with rewarding him for his focus.

Over time, I also worked on desensitization exercises. Gradually exposing my dog to strangers in a controlled environment helped reduce his reactivity. Starting from a distance and slowly decreasing it as he became more comfortable, these sessions played a significant role in curbing his barking behavior.

Incorporating these strategies into our daily routine has significantly improved my dog’s behavior. It took patience and persistence, but the bond we strengthened through this process is invaluable. For anyone dealing with a reactive dog, remember that change is possible with the right approach and understanding.

In this video, I share more tips and demonstrate some of the techniques that have helped us. It’s a journey, but one that’s well worth the effort for the peace and happiness of both you and your furry friend. #rescuedog #dogtraining #reactivedogtraining #dogbehaviour
