Woman Who Visited Auschwitz with Elon Musk Shares Insights on the Billionaire’s Behavior During the Trip

Elon Musk’s Auschwitz Visit: A Survivor’s Partner Speaks Out

Auschwitz is a powerful symbol of the Holocaust, a time when millions of Jewish people and others were systematically murdered. For Gidon Lev, a Holocaust survivor, visiting the camp is personal. It’s where his father, Ernst Lev, died during a death march. His visit to the site last year, alongside his partner Julie Gray, and Elon Musk, has sparked controversy.

Julie Gray’s Criticism

Julie Gray took to Facebook to share her disappointment with Musk’s behavior during the visit. She described it as a “photo-op event” and accused Musk of being “unmoved by the experience.” Gray noted that she and Lev initially hoped Musk’s presence would draw attention to the importance of Holocaust remembrance. However, in hindsight, she regretted the decision, even expressing embarrassment over the photos she took that day.

A Detatched Visit

Gray vividly recalled the visit, contrasting Lev’s emotional reaction with Musk’s indifference. She explained, “I spent hours with him and walked with him through Auschwitz,” but Musk seemed focused on his image, not the historical significance. Gray noted how Musk posed for cameras while standing near relics of the past, like piles of shoes and hair meant to honor the victims. In stark contrast, Gidon’s connection to the site was deeply personal.

Controversial Gestures and Statements

Musk’s actions were not limited to his visit to Auschwitz. Just days before, he was accused of making a “Nazi salute” during Donald Trump’s inauguration. Some defended Musk, claiming it was simply a Roman salute. Additionally, Musk made disturbing Holocaust-related jokes on social media, which many found offensive. The Anti-Defamation League condemned these comments, emphasizing the importance of treating the Holocaust with the respect it deserves.

Gray’s Harsh Critique

In her post, Gray described Musk as a “sociopath” who showed no understanding of the emotional weight of the visit. She expressed her frustration over his behavior, particularly when he placed a wreath at Auschwitz and walked away, ignoring Lev. Gray concluded that it was naive to think of Musk as a friend of the Jewish community.

Musk’s Role in Holocaust Education

Despite this criticism, Musk’s visit to Auschwitz was part of his broader involvement in Holocaust education. In January 2024, he participated in a symposium on antisemitism in Krakow, Poland. However, Gray’s account suggests that Musk’s actions at Auschwitz didn’t align with a genuine commitment to Holocaust education or remembrance.

A Missed Opportunity

Musk’s visit to Auschwitz could have been a chance to honor the victims of the Holocaust and promote education. Instead, Gray’s post paints a picture of missed empathy and detachment. As Holocaust survivors like Gidon Lev age, it’s crucial to preserve their stories, and public figures must approach these moments with genuine respect.
