I recently encountered a sociological study in which a woman was abandoned on the sidewalk while dressed neatly. Upon noticing her, many individuals stopped to ask about her parents and offer help. However, when the same woman was left in the same location with dirty and torn clothes, most people simply walked by without paying any attention. The few who did look at her did so with disdain.

This is the harsh reality of our time. It raises the question, “When did society become so focused on superficial appearances, neglecting the true value of individuals?” Or, why is the worth of a wealthy individual deemed higher than that of someone less fortunate?

Thankfully, we come across an individual on the way who shows that there are still people who have not lost the ability to empathize with those who are in need, giving us optimism that there is still hope.

Upon seeing a homeless man collecting change on the roadside, Casey Fischer made a spontaneous decision to visit Dunkin’ Donuts for a coffee break in between her classes. Subsequently, she entered the establishment with the intention of purchasing some food.

Fisher noticed that the man only had a few coins in his hand as she approached him. She then extended an invitation for him to sit at her table and kindly offered to cover the cost of his bagel and coffee.

Chris introduced himself to Fischer and explained that his frequent mistreatment was due to his homelessness.

He admitted that his substance abuse transformed him into the person he despised. All he truly desired in life was to become the person his deceased mother would have been proud of, but somehow he couldn’t achieve that.

Fischer expressed her pleasure in meeting Chris and mentioned that she needed to head back to class. Despite this, he gestured for her to pause, quickly wrote something on a crumpled piece of paper, and handed it to her before she left.

Upon reading the note, Fischer was shocked. She had not anticipated the significant effect her actions would have on the homeless man. This encounter held a deeper meaning for him beyond just a casual coffee and bagel meet-up. A change occurred within him because of it.

The message read, “I wanted to kill myself today.” Thanks to you, I have changed my mind. I appreciate you, wonderful person.
