Whoopi Goldberg Speaks Out About Her Future on ‘The View’

Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in November 2024.

Whoopi Goldberg Reflects on Retirement Plans

A Serious Hint on Retirement

On Tuesday’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg marked her 69th birthday. However, the celebratory mood shifted as Goldberg hinted that retirement might be on her horizon. Despite having a reported net worth of $60 million, she expressed concerns about financial pressures, raising eyebrows among viewers.

Living Like the Average American

During a segment on financial struggles and election fallout, Goldberg emphasized that, despite her Hollywood success, she still considers herself part of the working class. “If I had all the money in the world, I wouldn’t be sitting here,” she remarked, highlighting the everyday burdens many Americans face. “I’m still on the job because I have to—just like everyone else.”

Family and Financial Pressures

Goldberg, who has been with The View since 2007, earns $8 million annually from the show. She shared how financial responsibilities remain a concern for her. “My daughter’s got mouths to feed. My great-granddaughter’s family needs support. I know how hard it is,” she explained.

Comments on Ocasio-Cortez and National Issues

Goldberg also weighed in on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s efforts to engage voters, offering praise while cautioning against focusing on isolated issues. “We talk to folks every day about what’s bothering them,” Goldberg said. “But the thing upsetting some people shouldn’t be the reason 85% of others are put in danger.”

Viewer Reactions and Social Media Backlash

Despite her comments, many social media users were skeptical. Some questioned how Goldberg could identify as financially strapped, given her wealth. “She owns multiple properties and rakes in millions every year. How is she living paycheck to paycheck?” one user tweeted. Others mocked her, noting her luxurious lifestyle in contrast to her claims of financial hardship.

A Changing Landscape in Daytime TV

Goldberg’s remarks come at a time when several longtime TV hosts are stepping back from their roles. NBC’s Hoda Kotb, for example, announced plans to leave Today in 2024 to focus on family. While The View‘s Joy Behar continues hosting well into her 80s, it remains uncertain whether Goldberg will follow suit or retire.

Will Viewers Relate?

Goldberg’s hints at retirement and comments on financial struggles have sparked debate. The question remains: will viewers empathize with her concerns, or will they see it as another disconnect from the realities most Americans face?
