What led Donald Trump to break tradition with a blue suit at the pope’s funeral

Trump Turns Heads at the Pope’s Funeral

On April 26, Donald Trump drew attention at Pope Francis’ funeral by wearing a bright blue suit. He stood out among a sea of black-clad dignitaries. His outfit sparked backlash online, with many calling it “disrespectful.” Still, some believe he had a reason for making such a bold choice.

A Flashback to February

In February, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Senator JD Vance at the White House. When Zelenskyy arrived in a black military-style outfit, Trump mocked him, saying, “You’re all dressed up!”

Ironically, two months later, Zelenskyy followed Vatican protocol for the pope’s funeral, wearing a formal black suit. This time, Trump was the one violating dress expectations.

Vatican Funeral Dress Code

SkyNews reported that men attending a papal funeral must wear a dark suit, black tie, and a black lapel button. A white shirt is allowed.

Trump wore a white shirt, but paired it with a bright blue suit and light blue tie. In contrast, Melania observed protocol, appearing in a traditional black ensemble—even on her 55th birthday. Former President Joe Biden and Prince William also opted for dark suits that respected Vatican customs.

Social Media Reacts

Trump’s wardrobe choice lit up social media.

“Only one guy shows up in a blue suit to the Pope’s funeral. You’ll never guess who,” tweeted attorney Ron Filipkowski.

“He makes everything about himself,” another user wrote.

Actor Billy Baldwin compared it to Zelenskyy’s outfit in February, quipping, “Trump wore a blue suit to the Pope’s funeral? Worse than Zelenskyy in military gear at the White House!”

Others chimed in, accusing Trump of trying to be “the center of attention.”

Not Everyone Was Offended

Some defended the blue suit. One person argued it symbolized “rebirth, sovereignty, authority,” calling the moment a “transition of power.” Another suggested, “He should’ve worn white to really make an impression.”

Cultural and Religious Differences

Catholics usually follow strict funeral attire. But not all faiths do. Trump is a non-denominational Christian. Prince William represents the Church of England. President Murmu is Hindu. All three wore blue.

Their outfit choices may reflect religious backgrounds rather than disrespect.

A Strategic Move?

Was the blue suit a calculated statement? A nod to faith? A simple fashion choice?

Whatever the reason, Trump succeeded in sparking conversation—again. And maybe, that was his plan all along.
