The Secret to a Long Life
A 109-year-old woman claims that avoiding men is the key to longevity. Jessie Gallan, Scotland’s oldest resident, stunned caregivers with her insights as she celebrated her 109th birthday. She believes that steering clear of males and enjoying a daily serving of porridge have contributed to her remarkable age.
Jessie Gallan’s Journey
Born in 1906, Jessie grew up on a farm in Kintore, Scotland, with five sisters and a brother. At 13, she left home to work as a milkmaid, sharing a straw-filled mattress with her siblings. Her early career also included a stint at a farm restaurant and later at a hotel hosting the Queen and Queen Mother.
Life at Crosby House
Eventually, Jessie moved to Crosby House, a private care facility for the elderly. Her caregiver, Gillian Bennett, described her as a lovely woman. Jessie maintains her independence, enjoying music, exercise, and socializing. Bennett noted that Jessie believes her long life stems from staying active and engaged. In March 2015, Jessie passed away, but her unique longevity secret remains memorable. “My secret to a long existence has been avoiding men,” she quipped, “Simply put, they’re not worth the hassle.”
Healthy Habits
Jessie emphasized the importance of regular exercise and a daily warm bowl of porridge, proudly stating she never married. Many women around the world likely resonate with her perspective. Jessie loved oatmeal throughout her life. To celebrate her birthday on January 2, she enjoyed dinner and cake at Crosby House.
Staying Active and Engaged
Rebecca Streeter, a senior support worker, commented, “Jessie still participates in group activities because she enjoys her exercise.” Jessie attends every performance and cherishes her Sundays at church. Her commitment to a wholesome lifestyle is evident. Following the passing of Clare Dawson, who died in June 2013 at 109, Jessie became Scotland’s oldest woman. Ethel Lang, 114, from Barnsley, now holds the title of the oldest living person in the UK.
