Richard Gere’s Former Estate Faces Major Transformation
Richard Gere’s former estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, is undergoing a dramatic change. The classic 1938 Colonial home is being demolished to make way for a nine-lot subdivision. Developer SBP Homes bought the 32-acre property for $10.75 million in November 2024.
A Controversial Demolition
Public reaction to the news was immediate and mixed. Many expressed sorrow over the loss of such a historic structure. One user wrote, “What a shame. That was one beautiful home.” Others criticized the developers, accusing them of valuing land over heritage.
Plans for New Development
According to Realtor.com on May 23, 2025, the land will be split into lots between 2.2 and 4.8 acres. These vacant plots will be sold for new home construction. Once complete, this will be the town’s largest subdivision project since 2007.
Preserving What Remains
Before demolition, Hudson Valley House Parts stepped in to salvage key architectural features. The team saved oak-paneled rooms, stone mantels, nautical bay windows, and the original entryway.
Founder Reggie Young expressed regret:
“It’s a real shame the house is being torn down. Once the stuff is gone, it’s never coming back.”
Still, he emphasized that serious buyers appreciate quality design and craftsmanship—and that salvaging materials helps the environment.
A Shift in Plans
Gere bought the property from singer Paul Simon and Edie Brickell in 2022. He had planned to turn the land into a farm. However, those plans changed when he and his wife, Alejandra Silva, chose to move to Spain.

Life in Spain and Plans to Return
Richard and Alejandra now live in Madrid with their sons. However, they don’t plan to stay forever. According to The Daily Mail in April 2025, the couple intends to return to the U.S. within a few years.
Alejandra shared, “We just have to balance our lives there and here.” She admitted she misses the U.S. Richard’s son, Homer, echoed that sentiment, saying he hopes the family returns soon.
A New Chapter for the Couple
In a January 2025 Elle España interview, Richard said he felt fulfilled in Spain.
“We are happier than ever. Alejandra is home, and if she is happy, I am happy,” he said.
The couple also shares a deep commitment to environmental causes. They’ve worked together on sustainability projects, including Sierra a Mar in Mexico.
In Vanity Fair Spain, Richard described the move as a way to support Alejandra’s roots.
“She gave me six years in my world. Now it’s only fair I give her at least six in hers,” he said.
Spotlight on Homer Gere
As Richard and Alejandra settle abroad, attention is shifting to Homer Gere, Richard’s 25-year-old son. In April 2025, Homer attended the City Harvest Gala in New York with his father and stepmother.
Fans were quick to praise his appearance:
-
“Son is handsome just like his dad!”
-
“Wow, he could be the next Superman!”
Like Mother, Like Son
Some fans pointed out that Homer strongly resembles his mother, actress Carey Lowell.
“He’s the spitting image of his mom, not Richard,” one person commented.
This isn’t Homer’s first public appearance to draw attention. In May 2024, he walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival with Richard and Alejandra, once again capturing headlines.
