We Left for Two Weeks—Then Came Back to a Nightmare

By the time we understood what we were seeing, the mice had already claimed that corner of our home as their own. The fibrous clump by the window was their fortress, built from shredded insulation, gnawed wood, and droppings packed into every crevice. They had slipped through a gap no bigger than a coin, turned silence into cover, and transformed a child’s bedroom into a hidden infestation in just days.

Cleaning became less about tidiness and more about reclaiming safety. We vacuumed, scrubbed, trapped, and sealed, layering steel wool and caulk over every possible entry. Each snap of a trap was a grim reminder of how quickly we’d lost control—and how determined we were to take it back. Now, every odd speck near a window, every faint scratching in the night, is a signal we refuse to ignore.
