Viewers Furious After Shocking American Idol Elimination: “No Way That’s Right”

Although the winner has been revealed, the “American Idol” finale has been marred by a flood of criticism regarding the final vote, which has caused viewers to support a new favourite.

There was a lot of excitement when “American Idol” revealed Jamal Roberts as the season 23 winner on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Roberts was shown grinning while clutching a winner’s gift basket and his two young girls in a photo posted on the show’s official Facebook page. The post announced the conclusion of this season’s tournament and hailed his win.

Even though Roberts won, his victory sparked intense reactions from the audience, many of whom expressed support for John Foster, the runner-up. The discussion swiftly dominated social media, with several viewers expressing dissatisfaction and disappointment.

On Instagram, several fans shared their thoughts, with one writing“Eh. John should have won.” Another commented, “John was robbed,” while a third added“Another rigged season.

Facebook comments echoed similar sentiments. One person wrote“John should have won. He was so natural. Jamal screams to [sic] much.”

Another said“I really think John should have won. We need a good old fashioned country singer. They will all move on, all off them were great [sic].”

Some expressed stronger discontent. A fan shared“John Foster got robbed. I will not watch next season.” Another quipped“Yeah, it should have been John Foster cause he’s definitely better [sic].”

Still, not all comments were critical. One person acknowledged both finalists, stating“They’re both going places. Congratulations Jamal. Now John Foster isn’t bound to American Idol contract [sic].”

In addition to being a performer, Roberts is the father of two girls, Harmoni and Lyriks, according to his Instagram profile.

The response to this season’s outcome has sparked a lot of internet conversation. Many fans, especially those who support Foster, are still debating the result even though Roberts is now the official winner.

However, the finalists haven’t been the only ones to receive viewer comments this season. A number of fans criticised Carrie Underwood’s judging techniques and even demanded that she be replaced for the upcoming season after her guest appearance earlier in the competition sparked their own round of criticism.

Ahead of the May 12 “American Idol” episode, Underwood adopted a fantasy aesthetic by dressing like Rapunzel in a beautiful purple gown with a contemporary twist. The dress combined bold flair with elegance with its stunning thigh-high split and beautiful floral embroidery at the front.

Her long blonde hair flowed all the way down to her silver stilettos, accented with purple flower accessories that added an extra touch of enchantment. Underwood shared the look on Instagram with the caption“It’s a #DisneyNight fit check! #CUonIDOL,” just before the Disney-themed episode aired.

That evening, the top five competitors competed for America’s vote by performing twice, once as villains and once with a song about heroes.

Many viewers were more interested in Underwood’s judgement than on her clothing, which attracted notice for its quirky reference to Rapunzel. Online, her criticisms generated a lot of responses.

One blunt viewer didn’t mince words, penning“Get rid of her. Her bias is showing.” Frustration continued as another viewer shared“I wish it was a way to vote you off Definitely plays favorites and it’s cringey to watch [sic].”

Among the critics, one conflicted fan expressed“I love Carrie but this outfit was not it! And why critiquing Jamal so harshly? when the other guys do the same things that he does…he’s incredible! And i’m so shocked that Gabby was sent home [sic].”

An individual echoed a similar concern, “Yep she definitely didn’t like Jamal.” A viewer even appealed for changes, “Jelly Roll pleaseeeeee [sic]she’s got to go!” A disheartened fan didn’t hold back their disappointment, saying“I hope you don’t be a judge on this show again you bring fake energy. Please don’t come back [sic].”

However, some viewers were quick to defend the judge, with one fan encouraging her, “You’re still going to get criticized, so you might as well do whatever you want.”

Another admirer praised her, “Loved you as a judge this year. People don’t realize that you are dressed as Rapunzel tonight ….so much hate in this world. Love you, Carrie.”

Finally, someone else chimed in with a hopeful message, “Carrie I enjoyed watching you as a judge on American Idol, this year!I hope you come back year!![sic]”

Host Ryan Seacrest led the evening as she joined fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie in reducing the competition to its top three finalists on the night that Carrie Underwood received harsh criticism from the public. Following two performances apiece, Thunderstorm Artis and Slater Nalley were eliminated.

Nalley sang “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from “Toy Story” and “Born to be Wild” from “D3: The Mighty Ducks,” while Thunderstorm performed “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from “Cinderella” and “Find Yourself” from “Cars.”

Advancing to the finale were Foster, Roberts, and Breanna Nix. Foster performed “The Bare Necessities” from “The Jungle Book” and “Rainbow Connection” from “The Muppet Movie.”

Roberts impressed with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” from “Remember the Titans” and “Beauty and the Beast” from the classic film of the same name. Breanna moved forward after singing “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” from “The Parent Trap” and “You’ll Be in My Heart” from “Tarzan.”

Viewers were divided by the season’s finale outcomes and guest appearances, which kept the “American Idol” debate going strong despite the season’s spectacular performances and surprising turns.
