Veterans Coping With PTSD Can Find Love And Healing With Rescued Wolves

Compared to the wars of past centuries, we’ve come a long way in our understanding of the mental impact battle can have on soldiers.

Yet, even though we understand PTSD and similar issues a lot better, we still have a long way to go when it comes to actually treating and supporting the veterans who suffer from it.

While federal and state support lags, it’s up to smaller groups to find ways to help.

The Lockwood Animal Rescue Center rescues wolves and wolfdogs, giving them a safe place to live. In many cases, if a wolf accidentally enters private land or a urban area, they are killed for that mistake, and wolfdogs are euthanized regularly due to laws against their adoption.

LARC gives them an alternative.

LARC doesn’t stop there, though.

Through their “Wolves and Warriors” program, they pair returning soldiers suffering from PTSD with a dog in need, as well as another veteran who is farther along in their recovery.

The facility in Frazier Park, California is home to 40 wolves and wolfdogs.

Many of those animals have also suffered trauma prior to coming to the sanctuary and by being paired with a veteran, both can learn to heal.

LARC knows that they’re not performing miracles, but simply providing a path to healing.

“At LARC we are aware that there is no cure for PTSD and survivors’ guilt but what we offer is a safe place, supported by our staff to explore these events and to understand that healing is possible.”

In 2018, they partnered with Animal Planet for a documentary show about their program.

Besides bringing more awareness to the struggles of veterans, it also means that LARC can have a bit more money to put towards helping even more vets and animals.
