U.S. Olympic representative discusses how Donald Trump might affect LA’s 2028 Olympic Games

Trump’s Potential Impact on the 2028 LA Olympics

A U.S. Olympic official has shared how Donald Trump could affect the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Gene Sykes, Chair of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, assured the public that Trump’s proposed travel restrictions likely won’t prevent athletes from attending.

Travel Restrictions and Reassurances

In March, the Trump administration considered broad travel bans targeting countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, and Cuba. These proposed restrictions, along with reports of detentions and deportations, sparked travel warnings from certain nations. However, Sykes stated, “We’ve had extensive discussions with Washington, D.C., and received tremendous support from the administration and Congress.” He emphasized the excitement surrounding the LA ’28 Games, with the administration committed to making the event successful for both American and international athletes.

Visa Process and Administration Support

Sykes also highlighted that the administration understands the importance of hosting the Olympics. He said, “We were reassured about the visa process and the support we’ll receive to ensure athletes and their entourages can participate.”

Transgender Athletes Controversy

Another Trump policy affecting the 2028 Games is the executive order barring transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. Signed in February, the order could limit the entry of “males seeking to participate in women’s sports” for competitions. During a recent US Olympic and Paralympic Committee meeting, Sykes addressed the policy’s impact, noting it was a key topic of discussion.

Commitment to Fairness and Dialogue

Sykes reaffirmed the Committee’s dedication to supporting athletes’ opportunities, especially for women, ensuring a fair and safe competitive environment. He assured that the board will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and keep an open dialogue on the issue as discussions progress.
