Trump’s New Executive Order Sparks Debate on School Discipline
The Trump administration is pushing for changes in school discipline, sparking a major debate among parents. On April 23, 2025, Trump signed an executive order titled ‘Reinstating Common Sense School Discipline Policies.’ This order aims to provide new guidance to K-12 schools, focusing on objective behavior rather than DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), as stated by the White House.
A Shift in Priorities
Under the section ‘Making America’s Educational Institutions Great Again,’ the order emphasizes prioritizing students, parents, and teachers over teachers’ unions. It claims that policies should serve the interests of American families first. This marks a stark departure from policies under Democratic presidents like Joe Biden and Barack Obama, signaling sweeping changes to the country’s education system.
Obama’s Discipline Policies
During Obama’s tenure, there was a focus on reducing suspensions, expulsions, and disciplinary actions that disproportionately affected Black, Latino, and Indigenous students. In 2014, the Obama administration revealed that Black students were more than three times as likely to be suspended compared to white students for similar infractions. The Obama-era guidelines encouraged schools to use ‘restorative’ measures and avoid harsh disciplinary actions unless absolutely necessary.
Trump’s Rollback of Obama-Era Guidelines
During his first term, Trump reversed Obama’s initiatives. In December 2018, the U.S. Department of Education, led by Betsy DeVos, officially rescinded the discipline guidelines. However, in May 2023, the Biden administration urged public schools to examine disciplinary practices to ensure fairness.
Trump’s New Order on Discipline
Trump’s new executive order calls for new federal guidance on school discipline. He claims that previous guidelines promoted a “discriminatory equity ideology” and were harmful. Although the order doesn’t specify what ‘discipline’ entails, many assume it includes alternatives to suspensions, especially in cases involving racial discrimination.
Mixed Reactions from Parents
The order has sparked mixed reactions from parents. Tiffany Justice, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, supports the order, arguing that it empowers local school boards and reduces federal overreach. She believes this will allow teachers to focus on teaching, not chaos. On the other hand, some parents express concern, with one stating, “I don’t want Trump telling people how to discipline my child.”
Concerns About Civil Rights
Critics, including civil rights advocate Judith Browne Dianis, warn that the executive order undermines civil rights protections. Dianis believes that the order could contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline, as it could lead to harsher punishments based on race, color, national origin, sex, or disability. The controversy continues to grow, with many questioning the implications of this new approach to school discipline.
