Mark Carney Visits Trump at the White House
Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, recently visited U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. While they covered several topics, one surprising subject dominated: the long-debated idea of Canada becoming America’s 51st state.
Trump Pushes His Favorite Idea
As always, Trump wasted no time. He immediately raised the idea of folding Canada into the U.S. During their high-profile meeting on May 6, Trump even suggested it would be a “wonderful marriage” between the two nations.
Before the visit, Trump admitted to reporters he wasn’t sure what Carney planned to discuss. Yet once they met, Trump couldn’t resist bringing up his favorite fantasy.
Carney Shuts It Down
However, Carney didn’t hold back either. While open to diplomacy and trade, he firmly shut down the statehood talk. He declared, “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale.”
Carney added confidently, “It’s not for sale. Won’t be for sale, ever.” Echoing Justin Trudeau’s past stance, he left no doubt about Canada’s independence.
Compliments and Clashes
Despite their differences, both leaders exchanged polite compliments. Trump called Carney a “very talented person,” while Carney labeled Trump a “transformational president.” Still, the tension over statehood hung in the air.
Carney even compared Canada to untouchable landmarks like the Oval Office and Buckingham Palace. “We are masters in our own home,” he said. “We can give ourselves far more than any foreign government can ever take away.”
Trump’s Bieber-Like Comeback
But Trump didn’t let the matter drop. He fired back with a line that sounded straight out of a Justin Bieber lyric: “I say, ‘Never say never.’”
Pushing further, Trump added, “I’ve had many, many things that were not doable and ended up being doable.” Clearly, he believes the door isn’t entirely closed.
Body Language Speaks
Meanwhile, body language expert Beth Dawson analyzed their interaction. She described Carney as “assertive but also submissive and apprehensive.” She noted his determined expression but also sensed a hint of intimidation.
Canada Stays Independent — For Now
In the end, only time will tell if this was just another off-the-cuff Trump moment or a hint of bigger ambitions. For now, though, Carney seems determined to keep Canada proudly independent — right where it is, north of the border.
