Trump Fires Back at Walmart Over Tariff Price Hike Warnings
Former President Donald Trump lashed out at Walmart after the retail giant warned of possible price increases due to tariffs.
Walmart Warns of Rising Prices
Walmart sources products from countries like Canada, China, India, Mexico, and Vietnam — all facing at least a 10% tariff.
Trump had previously raised tariffs on most Chinese goods to 145%. However, he later reduced them to 30% for a 90-day truce with China.
Still, Trump warned that even steeper tariffs could return if a trade deal isn’t reached.
Walmart CEO Speaks Out
Earlier this week, Walmart CEO Douglas McMillon hinted at price hikes.
During a May 15 earnings call, he explained the challenge:
“We will do our best to keep our prices low. But given the scale of the tariffs — even at reduced levels — we can’t absorb all the pressure. Retail margins are too narrow.”
Trump Responds on Truth Social
Trump didn’t hold back. On Saturday, he took to Truth Social to push back against McMillon’s remarks.
“Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs for raising prices. They made BILLIONS last year — far more than expected,” Trump wrote.
He added:
“Between Walmart and China, they should ‘EAT THE TARIFFS,’ and not charge customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching — and so will your customers!”
Mark Cuban Offers a Warning
Billionaire Mark Cuban also weighed in — but with a different message.
Posting on Bluesky, he urged Americans to stock up before prices rise.
“It’s not a bad idea to head to your local Walmart or big box store and buy consumables now — from toothpaste to soap. Anything you can store, get it before they restock.”
Cuban also claimed companies might use tariffs as an excuse to raise prices:
“Even if it’s made in the USA, they’ll hike prices and blame tariffs.”
