Trump officials sent birth control worth $10 million to be incinerated, turning down the option to donate it

Trump Administration Orders Destruction of $10M in Contraceptives

Taxpayers Foot $167,000 Bill Despite Charity Offers to Take It All for Free

The Trump administration has approved the destruction of nearly $10 million worth of contraceptives, adding another $167,000 in disposal costs to U.S. taxpayers. The supplies include contraceptive pills, IUDs, and implants—all of which charities offered to distribute at no cost.

Contraceptives Set for Incineration

Despite public health groups offering to handle the logistics, the government insisted on burning the supplies. These items, already paid for by taxpayers, will be shipped from warehouses in France and Belgium to a specialist facility for incineration.

The move aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader goal of shutting down USAID, the world’s largest provider of global aid. In 2023, the U.S. spent $68 billion—just 0.6% of the federal budget—on international aid. Still, the administration has prioritized cutting costs abroad.

Aid Groups Slam the Decision

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) criticized the government’s claim that destruction was more cost-effective than donation.

“That argument is utter nonsense,” said Marcel Van Valen, head of IPPF’s supply chain. “We even offered to collect, repackage, and distribute everything globally—at our own cost.”

Another nonprofit, MSI Reproductive Choices, also condemned the decision.

“This isn’t about saving money,” said Sarah Shaw, the group’s associate advocacy director. “It’s about exporting a harmful ideology that endangers women.”

Real-World Consequences

Shaw explained the human cost:

“The warehouse contents could’ve covered three years’ worth of contraception for Senegal. Now, we’ll face massive shortages. Women will suffer from unsafe abortions. Girls will drop out of school.”

Ideology Over Impact?

The administration justifies the move as part of a broader plan to reduce federal wages and overseas spending—a strategy aimed at tackling the $36.7 trillion national debt. Ironically, experts estimate that Trump’s new spending plans may add another $3.3 trillion to that figure.

Despite choosing the destruction route, the administration rejected free support from multiple global health organizations.

The Bottom Line

U.S. taxpayers already funded the $9.7 million in contraceptives. Now, they’re also footing the $167,000 bill to burn them. Meanwhile, women in low-income nations are left to face the consequences.
