A Landmark Election Night
Zohran Mamdani, 34, made history with a landslide victory in the New York City mayoral race, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He earned more than 1.03 million votes, surpassing all his opponents combined. With this triumph, Mamdani became the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor — a milestone moment for New York and for representation in American politics.
Tensions Between Mamdani and Trump
Even before election night, tensions were high between the progressive Mamdani and former President Donald Trump, who has deep roots in New York. In a June interview with Fox News, Trump dismissed the idea of a Mamdani victory as “inconceivable,” calling him “a pure communist.”
Ahead of the election, Trump went further on Truth Social, urging New Yorkers to back Cuomo instead. He warned that if Mamdani won, he would limit federal funding to the city, writing:
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home.”

A Victory Speech That Made History
When the final results came in, New York’s Board of Elections reported the highest voter turnout in more than 50 years, with over two million ballots cast. Standing before a roaring crowd on November 4, Mamdani didn’t hold back.
“New York will remain a city of immigrants, built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he declared.
Then, in a pointed jab at Trump, he added:
“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s the city that gave rise to him.”
Finally, Mamdani delivered the line that electrified the crowd:
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you — turn the volume up!”
Trump’s Ominous Response
It didn’t take long for Trump to fire back. Within hours, he posted a cryptic four-word warning on Truth Social:
“…AND SO IT BEGINS!”
The post immediately went viral, sparking speculation about what Trump meant. Some political analysts interpreted it as a threat of political retaliation, possibly through federal funding cuts or renewed public attacks. Others saw it as a signal that Trump intends to challenge Mamdani’s policies head-on.
The Battle Ahead
Whether Trump’s words were mere bluster or a preview of a brewing political storm, one thing is certain — Mamdani’s victory has reshaped New York’s political landscape. His win symbolizes a shift toward progressive ideals, while Trump’s reaction suggests he won’t stay silent on the sidelines.
The stage is now set for a high-stakes showdown between two of New York’s most outspoken figures — one representing the city’s changing identity, the other defending its past.
How far will Trump go, and how will Mamdani respond? The next chapter of this political rivalry is just beginning.
