Transgender Americans Could ‘Flee the Country’ Following Trump’s Record as ‘Most Anti-LGBTQ+ President’

Transgender Americans Consider Leaving the U.S.

Transgender Americans are increasingly considering leaving the United States. Many believe President Donald Trump is the “most anti-LGBTQ+ president in history.”

Vox reported that during Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, his rhetoric against “radical gender ideology” and “transgender insanity” intensified.

A frequently-run Trump television ad declared, “Kamala is for they/them. Trump is for you.” As his second term has progressed, attacks on transgender rights have grown sharper and more virulent.

Anti-Trans Policies Take Center Stage

Katie Sosin, an LGBTQ+ reporter for The 19th, told Vox that Trump’s approach to transgender rights is central to his administration.

“Trump is generally viewed as the most anti-LGBTQ+ president in history, and a lot of that stems from his approach to transgender issues,” Sosin said.

She highlighted several key actions:

  • Limiting health care access specifically for trans youth.

  • Revoking federal funding for providers offering gender-affirming care.

  • Reinstating the transgender military ban.

  • Denying passports to transgender individuals.

Trump not only campaigned on anti-trans policies but has also made them a core part of his governance.

Trans Identification Declines Among Youth

A report from the Centre for Heterodox Social Science found that transgender identification is declining sharply among young Americans. Eric Kaufmann, the center’s director and professor of politics at the University of Buckingham, analyzed recent survey data from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), Andover Phillips Academy, and Brown University.

Kaufmann noted that transgender and queer identification among Generation Z has dropped significantly since 2023. He said:

“Whether trans and queer identities will drop to 2010 levels is an open question. But the fact both have declined sharply in just two years is a startling and unanticipated post-progressive development that the education and media establishments will be reluctant to acknowledge.”
