Tragic Robbery Claims Life of Abuja News Anchor
A violent robbery at a residential apartment complex in Abuja claimed the life of 29-year-old news anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, leaving the media community stunned. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, confirmed that Maduagwu, who worked for Arise TV, died after falling from the third floor of her Katampe residence during the attack on Monday, September 29.
Rescue Attempts and Immediate Chaos
Vigilantes in the compound found Maduagwu unconscious after her fall and quickly alerted neighbors. She was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors performed CPR, but she did not survive.
The robbery occurred in the early morning at Unique Apartments, a three-storey twin building with 18 flats. Police reported that unknown assailants entered the compound during the early hours. One of the two private security guards stationed there was shot while trying to stop the attackers. Amid the chaos, Maduagwu, who lived on the top floor, jumped from the building in an attempt to escape.
Commissioner Adewale described the incident as tragic and very unfortunate. A special investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been deployed to track down the suspects. Authorities promised a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.

Family in Deep Mourning
Maduagwu’s family is grieving profoundly. Her father described the moment he learned about the tragedy as devastating. He recounted receiving an urgent call from a relative asking him to travel to Port Harcourt, without any details. His wife’s growing concern after being unable to reach Maduagwu led to arrangements to check on her at the apartment.
Despite requesting a helicopter from his company to reach her quickly, the full tragedy unfolded too late. Her father praised her as a passionate and committed young woman, dedicated to her country’s future, whose dreams were cut short far too soon.
Tributes Pour In
Following news of her death, tributes poured in from colleagues, public figures, and institutions nationwide. Arise News described Maduagwu as a beloved team member, skilled journalist, producer, and trained lawyer, who deeply connected with audiences and colleagues. Their statement read:
“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will live on.”
Government officials also expressed grief. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, called her a promising lawyer and journalist who brought professionalism and brilliance to her role. He urged all security agencies to investigate thoroughly and bring the attackers to justice, extending condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
