Tragic Loss in Charlotte: Ukrainian Refugee’s Dream Ends Suddenly

Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, came to North Carolina seeking a fresh start. She fled the war with her mother and siblings and quickly became a valued part of her new community. Known for her kindness and determination, she balanced multiple jobs, took English classes, and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant.

For two years, it seemed she was on the path to achieving the American dream. She worked hard, cared for her family, and saved money for important milestones. Those who knew her described her as strong, kind, and full of potential. But everything changed on August 22, 2025. After a long shift at a pizzeria in Charlotte, Iryna boarded a light-rail train. Though tired, she was happy and unaware of the tragedy ahead.

Authorities report that Decarlos Brown Jr., a man with a long criminal history, suddenly attacked her. Surveillance footage shows they had never met, which added to the shock and grief.

Brown was arrested at the next station and now faces first-degree murder charges. Federal officials are investigating other crimes on public transportation. Despite the quick response, the community was deeply affected by the loss.

Over a hundred people attended Iryna’s funeral to honor her memory. Her uncle, who helped the family settle in the U.S., said she was the embodiment of kindness and determination. Friends and coworkers remembered her love for animals, creativity, and willingness to help others. She had recently saved enough money to buy her first car and was preparing for her driver’s test—small victories that reflected her dreams.

Iryna’s death has united the community in support of refugees and efforts to improve safety. Though her life was cut short, her warmth, determination, and kindness continue to inspire all who knew her.
