Tom Hanks Sparks Outrage Among Trump Supporters with SNL Skit
Tom Hanks has ignited backlash from Trump supporters after portraying a MAGA-hat-wearing character named Doug on Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special.
Star-Studded SNL Celebration
On February 16, celebrities gathered in New York to celebrate SNL’s milestone. A-listers like Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, and Aubrey Plaza attended the event. Hanks also made an appearance—but his performance stirred controversy.
Hanks’ Controversial Role in Black Jeopardy
During a parody game show, Black Jeopardy, Hanks’ character, Doug, wore a red “Make America Great Again” hat. In a tense moment, host Kenan Thompson extended his hand for a shake. Doug hesitated before finally accepting, then joked, “Maybe I’ll start a show for you to come on, and we’ll call it White Jeopardy.”
Backlash Erupts on Social Media
Trump supporters flooded social media with criticism. Many accused Hanks of mocking them as “dumb, racist rednecks.” One user wrote, “Tom Hanks went on SNL dressed like a slob, insulting millions of Trump supporters.”
Calls for Boycotts and Criticism of SNL
Former RFK Jr. advisor Link Lauren slammed the skit, calling it “a tired trope that MAGA is racist.” He added, “This show wonders why their ratings are in the gutter.” Another Trump supporter fumed, “No one in the audience laughed as Tom Hanks played a racist Trump supporter refusing to shake hands with a Black man.”
Many conservatives are now calling for a boycott of SNL, arguing the show unfairly stereotypes Trump voters.
