The Shocking Arrival
This evening, I stepped into the yard and froze. My four-year-old daughter stood at the doorstep, her little pink backpack on, a rolling suitcase beside her—the one we usually took to the seaside.
Her eyes were shiny and red. She had clearly been crying.
“Sweetheart, what happened?” I crouched down. “Why are you standing here? And why the suitcase?”
She took a deep breath, her small chest rising as if she were about to deliver a very serious announcement.
“Daddy…” she said, her voice trembling. “I’m leaving this house.”
My Heart Skipped a Beat
I felt my stomach drop. “You… what? Where are you going? Why? Did something happen?”
She frowned, her lip trembling. “I can’t live here anymore!” Her tone was so dramatic, I almost thought she had rehearsed it.
Immediately, worst-case scenarios ran through my mind. Had someone hurt her? Had something happened at kindergarten?
“Explain properly… please,” I said, bracing myself.
And then came the words that completely shocked me.
The Reason Left Me Laughing
“I can’t live with your wife anymore,” she declared.
I blinked, stunned. “You mean… your mother?”
“Yes!” she said indignantly. “I don’t love her anymore!”
“Okay… and what did Mom do?” I asked.
She threw her hands up. “She’s… a monster! A real monster! She won’t let me watch TV, she won’t let me eat chocolate, and she keeps making me clean my room!”
I turned away, struggling not to laugh.
Planning Her Escape
“So… where are you going to live then?” I asked, keeping my voice calm.
“Far away from your wife!” she said proudly.
“And more specifically?”
“At Grandma’s!” she announced like a champion. “Grandma lets me watch cartoons and always gives me chocolate!”
At that point, I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I burst out laughing. She stood there, so serious she looked forty, not four.
Back Inside, Safe and Loved
I hugged her tightly and kissed the top of her head.
“My little princess… come on, let’s go back inside. I’ll talk to that monster.”
She looked up at me, her eyes wide. “Daddy… will you really talk to her?”
“Of course,” I said with a smile. “But first, we unpack this suitcase, alright?”
She nodded. With the expression of a tiny champion, she rolled her suitcase back into the house.
