The unknown woman accompanying Trump at the Alaska meeting sparks interest — and leaves Putin smiling

There was a surprise star at Friday’s high-stakes summit and it wasn’t Trump or Putin.

It was Monica Crowley, the poised, camera-ready Chief of Protocol who managed to charm the famously stony Russian leader on the tarmac at Elmendorf Air Force Base.

With a handshake and a smile, Crowley not only sent Vladimir Putin off with grace, but reminded the world that behind every historic handshake, there’s a woman making sure every flag, every step, and every second is perfectly in place.

From Fox News to foreign affairs

Before she was managing protocol for summits between world powers, Monica Crowley was better known for sharp political analysis and her bestselling books on President Nixon.

Now? She’s the go-to event architect for President Trump’s major diplomatic moments, including this weekend’s tension-filled meeting with the Kremlin.

As Chief of Protocol, Crowley’s job isn’t glamorous, but it’s powerful. She oversees every detail of visits like Putin’s: coordinating with ambassadors and embassies, arranging official meetings, and ensuring protocol details such as flags and seating are correct.

But on Friday, her role took a visible turn when she was spotted sending off Putin with a warm smile and something rare: a visible grin from the Russian leader in return.

A seasoned insider with a spotlight moment

Trump nominated Crowley in early December, including for the Chief of Protocol role, and she was sworn in on May 30.

She’ll oversee America’s 250th Independence Day celebration, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. But this week, all eyes were on Anchorage, Alaska, where she quietly helped orchestrate one of the most closely watched diplomatic summits in recent memory.

Behind the scenes, she helped coordinate protocol for the 2.5-hour closed-door meeting between Trump and Putin. Diplomatic sources later suggested the talks touched on land swap proposals and a controversial non-NATO security guarantee for Ukraine.

While the world debated the implications, one thing was certain: Monica Crowley had earned her seat at the global table.

Who is Monica Crowley?

Columbia PhD and former Fox News analyst, Crowley brings more than just polish. She brings decades of experience.

She served as assistant secretary of the Treasury for public affairs during Trump’s first term, where she won the Alexander Hamilton Award for public service. Earlier, she worked as a foreign policy aide to President Nixon and authored two bestselling books chronicling his later years.

She also hosted The Monica Crowley Show on WABC Radio and was a frequent voice on NPR’s Morning Edition.

Still, despite the résumé, she’s largely stayed out of the spotlight, until now.

And with world leaders watching and major global events on the horizon, it looks like Monica Crowley’s moment is just beginning.
