Trump Visits UK: Awkward Moment with Prime Minister Starmer
Donald Trump recently traveled to the UK for a brief visit. During his trip, he met Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss key issues. However, their joint press conference took an unexpected turn when Trump criticized London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan — unaware that Starmer counts Khan as a friend.
Meetings and Discussions in Scotland
Trump held talks with Starmer in Scotland, covering topics such as tariffs, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the crisis in Gaza. Between meetings, Trump enjoyed a round of golf at one of his Scottish courses.
Earlier this year, Starmer visited the White House. He presented Trump with a handwritten letter from King Charles and extended an official invitation for a UK visit in September. Their previous meeting was marked by some awkward moments, setting the stage for more tension.
Press Conference Turns Tense
The Monday news conference in Edinburgh lasted about an hour. Suddenly, Trump sharply criticized Mayor Khan when asked if he planned to visit London during the State Visit.
“I’m not a fan of your mayor,” Trump said bluntly. “He’s done a terrible job. A nasty person, I think.”
Starmer, sitting beside Trump, quickly responded, “He’s a friend of mine.” His interruption made the tension clear.
Yet, Trump continued, “I think he’s done a terrible job but I will certainly visit London, I hope so.”
Ongoing Feud Between Trump and Khan
Trump and Khan have clashed publicly before, trading harsh words. Not long after the press event, Khan’s spokesperson issued a statement:
“Sadiq is delighted that President Trump wants to visit the greatest city in the world. He’d see how our diversity makes us stronger, not weaker; richer, not poorer.”
The statement also noted a rise in Americans applying for British citizenship under Trump’s presidency.
Trump Praises UK-US Relations Despite Criticism
Despite his harsh words toward Khan, Trump praised the relationship between the UK and US.
“The prime minister has been so supportive, strong, and respected. I respect him much more today after meeting his wife and family. He’s got a perfect wife, and that’s never easy to achieve,” Trump said.
Royal Fans React to Trump’s Upcoming State Visit
Trump is scheduled to return to the UK in September for a State Visit. There, he will meet King Charles and Queen Camilla.
However, the announcement sparked mixed reactions online. Some royal fans expressed outrage:
-
“Is this the first time the royals have hosted a convicted felon?”
-
“Bring on the protests. London does not accept felons.”
-
“Why do you want to host him? He is not worthy of a visit with the king!”
-
“Absolutely disgraceful.”
-
“It’s embarrassing that this visit is allowed to proceed. I’m truly disappointed.”
Supporters Voice Optimism
On the other hand, many users praised the visit:
-
“History in the making. President Trump returns with strength, class, and unapologetic leadership.”
-
“This event is more important than anyone could dream.”
-
“Meeting two of the most powerful leaders in the world — a great opportunity for big decisions that benefit us all.”
