The touching reason Jane Goodall never traveled without her stuffed monkey

A Soft Companion With a Powerful Message

For decades, a small stuffed gray monkey traveled the world with Jane Goodall. He wasn’t real, but his story was. Now, as the world mourns the legendary primatologist and anthropologist, the tale of her companion, Mr. H, shines as a symbol of resilience, hope, and quiet joy.

The Gift That Became a Legacy

Mr. H entered Goodall’s life in 1996 as a birthday gift from Gary Haun, a blind former U.S. Marine turned magician. Rather than letting tragedy define him, Haun embraced resilience, inspiring countless people with his performances. His gift to Goodall soon became more than a toy — it became a living tribute to perseverance.

From then on, Mr. H traveled with Goodall to more than 60 countries. He stood beside her at award ceremonies, sanctuaries, and classrooms, reminding people everywhere of strength through adversity.

A Symbol Shared With the World

Goodall never kept Mr. H’s story to herself. In interviews, lectures, and even on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2019, she explained his origin and Haun’s inspiring journey. Children often asked why she carried a toy monkey, and she always answered with warmth: “He is my little mascot.”

With every handshake and photo, Mr. H spread comfort and optimism. As Goodall herself said, “The hope and inspiration that Mr. H represents rubs off on every person who touches him.”

Carrying the Message Forward

To allow others to share in that hope, the Jane Goodall Institute introduced Mr. H Junior — a handcrafted miniature version of the plush. Sold through her foundation, he serves as a reminder of Goodall’s message of peace, compassion, and resilience.

Saying Goodbye to a Pioneer

On October 1, 2025, the Jane Goodall Institute announced that Goodall had passed away at age 91 while on tour in California. Her groundbreaking research forever changed how the world understands animals — their intelligence, empathy, and connection to us.

Yet her influence reached far beyond science. She proved that one voice, even the gentlest, can spark global change. Her legacy endures in sanctuaries, classrooms, conservation efforts, and in the little gray monkey who continues to remind us all that hope is never out of reach.
