The little-known royal title Prince Andrew lost

After being stripped of his military titles, Prince Andrew gave up his royal titles last week. It comes as new accusations are being pointed at the king’s brother over his connection to late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. While Andrew has given up his use of the Duke of York title, there are several other titles he no longer can use. And a few might surprise you.

Following the lastest accusations against Prince Andrew, in connection to the late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, on Friday, he gave up his royal titles.

In a statement posted at the Royal Family website, Andrew said, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.

He continued, “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson have been ferrefed to as the Duke and Duchess of Your. Ferguson has remained her titles despite the divorce some 20 years ago, but now, her titles are gone to.

The pair will no longer be referred to as the Duke and Duchess of York. But in fact, there are several other, less known, titles that are being taken away too. For example, as tradition goes,

Royal Family members are given three titles on their wedding day; One from England, one from Scotland and one from Ireland. Andrew and Sarah married in 1986, but divorced ten years later

Therefore, in Andrew’s case, his titles of Earl of Inverness (Scotland) and Baron Killyleagh (Ireland) are no longer his to carry. That means Sarah’s titles of Countess of Inverness and Baroness Killyleagh also are “up for grabs.”

While they no longer carry their royal titles, their children Beatrice and Eugenie, will keep their official titles of “Her Royal Highness.”
