Scott Pelley Calls Out Paramount on-Air
60 Minutes host Scott Pelley didn’t hold back. In a bold segment at the end of the latest episode, he directly criticized Paramount, the parent company of CBS News, for interfering with the show’s editorial independence.
Praising a Trusted Leader
Pelley began by honoring Bill Owens, the former executive producer of 60 Minutes, who resigned just days earlier.
“Bill was with CBS News for nearly 40 years, including 26 years at 60 Minutes,” Pelley said. “He covered war zones, the White House—his mission was to open minds, not close them.”
Pelley called Owens a cornerstone of the program and credited him with maintaining the show’s credibility.
Taking Aim at Paramount
Then, Pelley shifted tone. He accused Paramount of tightening its control over 60 Minutes content—especially in light of a pending merger that requires White House approval.
“Stories we’ve covered for 57 years are often controversial,” Pelley said, citing topics like the Israel-Gaza war and former President Donald Trump’s administration.
Editorial Independence Under Pressure
Pelley explained that while no stories were directly blocked, Paramount had begun supervising their content “in new ways.”
This, he said, made Owens feel the show had lost the journalistic independence it once had—prompting his resignation.
“Bill made sure stories were accurate and fair. He was tough that way,” Pelley added. “But Paramount’s actions crossed a line.”
Standing for Integrity
Although no one on the team welcomed Owens’ departure, Pelley said it proved one thing:
“He was the right person to lead 60 Minutes all along.”
Trump’s Ongoing Clash with 60 Minutes
Former President Trump has repeatedly criticized 60 Minutes, calling it “a dishonest political operative disguised as news.”
He is currently suing CBS for $20 billion, accusing the network of election interference tied to an interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris.
