The awkward moment involving Erika Kirk at a TPUSA event spreads rapidly online

Erika Kirk’s Speech at TPUSA Goes Viral

What was meant to honor her late husband Charlie Kirk quickly became a viral moment. Erika Kirk made what many are calling the “greatest Freudian slip of all time” during her speech at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, December 20.

The Freudian Slip

While praising her husband’s work, the 37-year-old accidentally said “grift” instead of “grit.”

“Despite the devastating loss of Charlie Kirk, my incredible husband… Caleb has persisted with the same grift—excuse me, gift, grit,” she said, correcting herself immediately.

The slip sparked a wave of online debate. Some viewed it as unintentional, while others questioned whether it was deliberate. Social media lit up with reactions.

“She said what she said… and meant it!” one user commented.

Honoring Courage

Erika was presenting the Charlie Kirk Courage Award to Utah Valley University student Caleb Chilcutt, who stood by Charlie during his assassination on campus earlier this year. Chilcutt has also led efforts to establish a permanent memorial for Charlie Kirk.

During the speech, Erika reassured Caleb:

“Trust me, you’re not a grifter, honey. It’s all good.”

Erika Kirk Steps Into Leadership

Following her husband’s assassination, Erika became the CEO and chair of Turning Point USA, vowing to continue his mission.

During the multi-day AmericaFest (Dec. 18–21), Erika also endorsed Vice President JD Vance for a potential 2028 presidential run.

“We are going to get my husband’s friend JD Vance elected for [48th US president] in the most resounding way possible,” she said.

From Tribute to Viral Moment

While Erika Kirk’s intent was to honor Charlie’s legacy and courage, her speech—and particularly the Freudian slip—dominated headlines and social media. Despite the awkward moment, she maintained composure, corrected herself, and highlighted the bravery of those who continued her husband’s work.
