Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel react to Charlie Kirk’s assassination – Video

The shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk has drawn tributes from across the political spectrum, including some of the last voices many expected to weigh in: late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

A Pause From Punchlines

On Wednesday night, Kimmel took to Instagram with a heartfelt message that stepped away from comedy entirely. “Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” he wrote.

“On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

The post struck a different tone from Kimmel’s usual sharp-edged humor, signaling just how deeply the tragedy reverberated.

Colbert’s Remarks

Stephen Colbert, in remarks ahead of The Late Show that evening, also dropped his trademark wit for a somber reflection.

“Our condolences go out to his family and all of his loved ones,” Colbert said. “I am old enough to personally remember the political violence of the 1960s, and I hope it is obvious to everyone in America that political violence does not solve any of our political differences.”

He continued with a warning: “Political violence only leads to more political violence. And I pray with all my heart that this is the aberrant action of a madman and not a sign of things to come.”

The moment stood out on a show known for satire, underlining how the brutality of Kirk’s death transcended partisanship.

A Nation in Shock

Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was killed at Utah Valley University while hosting the kickoff event of his American Comeback Tour. He was answering a student’s question about mass shootings when a bullet from a rooftop sniper struck his neck.

More than 3,000 students were in attendance as chaos erupted.

President Donald Trump announced Charlie Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him a “wonderful American” who embodied “faith, liberty, and courage.” Trump also issued a stern warning about the dangers of political rhetoric.

“It’s long past time for all Americans and the media to confront the fact that violence and murder are the tragic consequence of demonizing those with whom you disagree day after day, year after year, in the most hateful and despicable way possible,” the president said.

Remembering His Legacy

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and host of The Charlie Kirk Show, became a prominent figure in the media and on college campuses across the nation. He inspired thousands of young Americans with his energy, conviction, and faith.

In the wake of his assassination, even voices outside of conservative politics have set aside differences to recognize the tragedy of his loss.
