New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was confronted by an angry protester in downtown Manhattan on Friday, with the individual accusing him of being an “antisemite” and demanding he denounce Hezbollah and Sharia law.

The incident occurred in Foley Square, where Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and current state assemblyman from Queens, had gathered to show support for New York Attorney General Letitia James following her indictment earlier in the week on a charge of mortgage fraud.

Witnesses said the confrontation escalated quickly as the protester followed Mamdani while shouting criticisms.

Video footage captured by bystanders showed the man calling out to Mamdani, urging him to denounce extremist groups and policies associated with Sharia.

Security personnel intervened as the exchange grew heated, escorting Mamdani to his vehicle.

Mamdani did not respond to the protester’s questions or comments. He was seen getting into a car and leaving the scene as the man continued yelling.

The confrontation came amid heightened public attention following James’s indictment in the Eastern District of Virginia on a single count of bank fraud.

Mamdani appeared at Foley Square alongside James and several allies who expressed political solidarity with the embattled attorney general.

The protester’s accusations referenced past controversies surrounding Mamdani’s foreign policy positions and his vocal criticism of Israel.

The assemblyman has previously described himself as an advocate for Palestinian rights and a supporter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which has taken positions critical of Israel’s government.

While the Friday protest focused primarily on his appearance in support of James, the encounter drew renewed attention to Mamdani’s record and the reactions it has provoked among New York residents.

Law enforcement officers in the area monitored the situation, though no arrests or citations were reported.
