She Thought She Captured a Happy Bird in a Photo… But Was She Right?

A Walk in Nature

Spending time in nature often brings peace and unexpected surprises. Walks through fields, forests, or winding trails reconnect us with the world—and ourselves. For Australian photographer Kym Beechey, these outings are also a chance to capture wildlife.

She loves photographing hidden beauty, though animals are shy and fleeting. Every shot is both a challenge and a gift.

A Surprising Discovery

One quiet afternoon, Kym spotted what she believed was a newborn tawny frogmouth, a nocturnal bird often mistaken for an owl. Excited, she pulled out her phone and zoomed in.

The little “chick” seemed to perch sweetly, and to Kym’s delight, its face appeared to smile. It was a magical moment for any nature photographer.

The Funny Twist

But the magic quickly turned to laughter. Upon closer inspection, Kym realized her “baby bird” wasn’t a bird at all—it was a quirky-looking banksia pod from a nearby tree.

These woody seed pods, similar to pinecones, often appear like tiny creatures or faces when seen from the right angle. The mistake was easy—but it made the moment even more memorable.

Nature’s Wonders

Banksia trees are native to Australia and also grow in Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. Their pods split open in response to heat, such as from bushfires, releasing seeds that ensure new growth.

With their unusual and whimsical shapes, banksia pods have long fascinated humans. Kym added her “smiling bird” photo to her growing collection, proof that nature’s surprises aren’t always what they seem. Sometimes, the most unexpected discoveries are the ones we remember most.
