Sanders advocates for a 32-hour, four-day workweek across America, explaining the details

Bernie Sanders Pushes for a 32-Hour Workweek

As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries and boosts productivity, Senator Bernie Sanders sees a chance to transform the workweek. In a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Sanders proposed using AI gains to reduce traditional working hours, giving employees more free time.

“Your productivity rises because we give you AI,” Sanders explained. “Instead of cutting jobs, we reduce the workweek to 32 hours.”

The 32-Hour Workweek Act

Sanders’ proposal, the Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act, would require overtime pay for any hours beyond 32 per week. Essentially, it paves the way for a four-day workweek.

He argues that AI and automation improve efficiency, so workers shouldn’t be tied to a 40-hour week. “Let’s use technology to benefit workers,” Sanders said. “That means more time for family, friends, or education. You don’t have to work 40 hours a week anymore.”

The plan would roll out gradually over four years, allowing businesses time to adapt. While it has gained traction in some circles, the proposal remains controversial, especially in AI-heavy industries.

AI: Opportunity and Threat

Sanders’ concerns go beyond productivity. In an NBC News interview, he warned that AI could pose significant risks, including warfare and wealth inequality.

“I think we are not far from robotic soldiers,” Sanders said. “If leaders don’t have to worry about human lives in war, only the loss of robots, it changes global conflict dynamics.”

Robotic soldiers could alter the ethics of war, making it easier for countries to engage in conflict without human consequences.

The Growing Wealth Divide

AI and automation could also worsen wealth inequality. Sanders highlighted that billionaires like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg invest heavily in AI, concentrating wealth and power.

“Before we’ve seen the full impact of AI, the top 1% own more wealth than the bottom 93%,” Sanders said. “This trend threatens both our economy and democracy. Wealth and political power will further concentrate at the top, while working people risk losing living standards unless we act.”

AI and the Future of Jobs

Sanders also worries about AI’s effect on employment. Tech leaders predict that AI and robotics could replace most jobs, making work optional.

“Musk recently said AI and robots will replace all jobs. Working will be optional,” Sanders noted. “But what happens to people if all jobs disappear?”

He emphasized that Congress and the media have barely discussed the societal implications of widespread job displacement. “We need serious conversations about how Americans will sustain themselves in an AI-driven economy.”

Bernie Sanders frames AI not just as a technological revolution but as a challenge and opportunity. He calls for policies that protect workers, reduce overwork, and prevent unchecked concentration of wealth, ensuring technology benefits everyone, not just the few.
