As international attention remains fixed on President Donald Trump’s renewed push to bring Greenland under U.S. control, reactions from other global powers are growing more pointed—particularly from Russia, which has now issued one of its strongest warnings yet.
While debate over Greenland’s future has dominated headlines in Washington and Europe, Moscow has signaled that it views the situation as a serious national security and strategic stability issue, with potentially far-reaching implications for global peace.
Trump’s Greenland Proposal Draws International Scrutiny
Since returning to the White House in January, President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is a top priority for his administration. Despite firm resistance from Denmark, concerns within NATO, and criticism across the U.S. political spectrum, Trump has continued to frame the move as essential to American national security.
The president has repeatedly argued that both Russia and China view Greenland as strategically valuable, and that U.S. control of the Arctic territory would prevent rival powers from gaining an advantage.
In a statement last week that escalated diplomatic tensions, Trump said the U.S. would need to “defend Greenland,” adding that the objective could be achieved “the easy way or the hard way.
NATO Allies Push Back
On Tuesday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance met with officials from Denmark and Greenland to discuss the territory’s future. Danish representatives later described the talks as marked by a “fundamental disagreement.”
Several European nations have since voiced support for Denmark, with NATO members including France, Germany, and Sweden reportedly increasing their military presence in Greenland as a precautionary measure.
The possibility of conflict—however remote—between the U.S. and its European allies over an Arctic territory has raised alarm among foreign policy analysts.
Russia Raises Nuclear and Missile Defense Concerns
Russian officials have now entered the debate, warning that the Trump administration’s ambitions may extend beyond territorial control. According to Moscow, Greenland’s location could be used to support U.S. missile defense systems and nuclear strike capabilities, potentially undermining long-standing global security frameworks.
Trump has previously proposed a multi-layered missile defense initiative known as the “Golden Dome”, describing Greenland as “vital” to its success.
“The United States needs Greenland for national security,” Trump wrote on social media. “It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building.”
Russian Senator Issues Dire Warning
Dmitry Rogozin, a former Russian deputy prime minister and current senator, criticized Trump’s approach and described the president as “eccentric.” Rogozin argued that Greenland’s geography makes it uniquely suited for advanced military systems.
“Orbital sensors, ground interceptors, and decision-making systems all depend on geography,” Rogozin said. “Greenland’s Arctic position and proximity to Russia fit perfectly into this architecture.”
He further claimed that the U.S. intends to turn Greenland into a platform for both missile interception and potential nuclear deployment—an outcome he said would dismantle the strategic balance that has helped prevent nuclear conflict since 1945.
In a stark statement, Rogozin warned that any belief in achieving nuclear dominance over Russia or China could trigger catastrophic consequences. “This would be the beginning of the end of the world,” he said.
Strategic Reality on the Ground
The United States already maintains a military presence in Greenland, most notably at Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base). While several Cold War–era facilities were closed decades ago, analysts note they could potentially be reactivated.
Rasmus Sinding Søndergaard, an expert on U.S.–Denmark relations, told Newsweek that expanding existing bases could meet American security objectives without requiring any territorial acquisition or confrontation.

As diplomatic tensions rise, the Greenland debate has evolved from a territorial discussion into a broader question of global defense strategy, nuclear deterrence, and international cooperation.
